How to compare air conditioners
When you decide to buy an air conditioner the choice of brand is important.
A good person to ask is not a sales person in a retail outlet but an air conditioner installer. The following information is provided by Jeff Thatcher Air Conditioning Brisbane Southside.

Comparing Energy Consumption of Air Conditioners
Air conditioners have separate ratings for heating and cooling, so try to choose a model that has a higher rating in the area that suits your needs.
In Brisbane for example, the average air conditioner is used for about 600 hours of cooling and 100 hours of heating per year.
Each extra star can improve the efficiency of your air conditioner by up to 30%.
There are three kinds of Energy Rating labels for air conditioners. The one for cooling-only models has a blue band of stars and a blue box for the energy consumption figure. As the name implies, these air conditioners only have a cooling mode. The label for reverse-cycle models has two bands of stars. The blue band shows the efficiency when cooling, and the red band shows the efficiency when heating.
If you want to compare brands available in Australia try energy ratings of air conditioners
Here you can choose a specific model check its energy star rating against other models.
You can use our Heatload Calculator to check which size air conditioner may suit you. Getting an undersized air conditioner can lead to excessive energy costs.
Compare an Inverter to a Conventional Split System Air Conditioner
With standard technology the compressor goes through numerous start up
and shut downs
- this can be both noisy and cause
uncomfortable temperature swings.
Inverters use variable speed
compressors to provide only the amount of cooling required.
Comparing noise of air conditioners
Check with an installer as to what the operating noise is like.
This is important because a cheap air conditioner rattling in your ear while you are trying to sleep may defeat its purpose.
